Solar is simple in theory—and brutally detailed in practice. These are the lessons that separate “installed solar” from “solar that performs for decades.” If you want the cleanest outcome, build around these truths.

The 12 lessons that matter most

  1. The roof is king. Solar should never be a leak story. Roof-specific attachment and flashing discipline is non-negotiable.
  2. TOU is the new reality. Annual kWh is not the whole game—hourly pricing shapes your bill. Design for peak hours.
  3. Storage isn’t optional for many customers now. Batteries are the best tool for beating TOU and adding resilience.
  4. kW vs kWh must be explained. kW is “can I run it?” kWh is “how long?” A system must match both goals.
  5. Solar-only backup is a myth. Standard grid-tied solar shuts off in outages. Backup requires a microgrid-capable architecture.
  6. Permits reward completeness. The best way to go fast is to be correct the first time—plans, labels, placards, clearances.
  7. Serviceability is a design choice. If you can’t access a component later without chaos, the design is incomplete.
  8. Monitoring prevents expensive surprises. Early alerts catch failures before they become “months of lost production.”
  9. Shade is usually a math problem, not a feeling. Measure it, model it, then place arrays like a chess player.
  10. Conduit aesthetics matters—and also prevents errors. Clean routing, correct supports, correct derating, correct labeling.
  11. Battery safety is a stack, not a feature. Chemistry + BMS + installation practice + code compliance.
  12. Plan for growth. EVs, heat pumps, ADUs—design now so you don’t regret your system in 3 years.

How to use these lessons (practical)

If you’re shopping bids

Ask every contractor to explain TOU, battery sizing (kW/kWh), roof waterproofing details, and their monitoring plan. If they can’t explain it, they can’t own it.

If you already have solar

Consider adding storage for TOU and outages, and ensure you have monitoring and service support. Many “bad solar experiences” are actually “no service plan” experiences.

Keep the system price and borrowing decision clear

If you need to borrow, we suggest discussing a home equity line of credit (HELOC) with your bank or credit union. Compare the installation scope and price separately from the lender’s rates, fees and repayment terms.

A HELOC is secured by your home, which you could lose if you cannot repay. Rates are usually variable and payments can rise. The safest choice depends on your finances and the loan terms.
