Solar in Long Beach

Long Beach is a coastal city with serious sunshine and serious electric bills—which makes it a perfect place for solar + storage. But Long Beach is also personal to ABC Solar: this is where our grid-tie story went from “idea” to “reality.”

Long Beach’s first grid-tie era Beat TOU with storage Backup power you can trust Roof-aware, watertight installs

Some history (and a legendary inspector question)

ABC Solar installed the first solar grid-tie system in the City of Long Beach. Back then, solar grid-tie was so new that a city inspector looked at the equipment and asked:

Where does the water go?

It’s an honest, perfect question—because at the time, most people had only seen home “systems” that dealt with fluids: plumbing, irrigation, HVAC. Solar PV doesn’t move water. It moves electrons. It takes sunlight and makes electricity, safely synchronized to the utility grid.

What that moment says about Long Beach
  • Long Beach has always been a place where new ideas show up early—ports, industry, architecture, and energy.
  • When solar arrived, it arrived into the real world: inspectors, codes, safety, and utility rules.
  • We learned how to make solar “boringly reliable”—because that’s the goal.
What that moment says about ABC Solar
  • We built solar before it was mainstream.
  • We learned the rules by doing the hard work—permits, inspections, and utility interconnection.
  • We still build systems the same way: clean, safe, documented, and serviceable.

The early Long Beach grid-tie system used an SMA Sunny Boy inverter and early-era PV modules—proof that good design and careful installation age well.

Why Long Beach is ideal for solar + batteries

1) TOU rates make batteries the “profit center”

Solar makes energy in the day. Most bills hurt in the late afternoon and evening. Batteries move your solar power into the hours that matter most.

2) Coastal reality: salt air, fog, and roof details

Coastal installs demand durable attachments, clean wire management, and long-life component choices. We build for decades, not “a few good years.”

Many Long Beach customers are on SCE electricity. The modern design question is no longer “can solar work?”—it’s “how do we control the bill?”

Battery storage: the best strategy to beat TOU

Solar without storage can still help. But storage makes solar dispatchable—you decide when to use your stored energy. That is how you turn solar into a strategy, not just a set of panels.

What storage does
  • Shifts solar energy into peak-rate hours
  • Reduces expensive grid imports
  • Supports backup power during outages
  • Smooths through marine layer / cloudy periods
How we size it (simple version)
  • kW = how much power you need at once (what loads can run)
  • kWh = how long you can run them (runtime)
  • TOU sizing targets your peak window first; backup sizing targets your critical loads
  • We tune settings so the system behaves exactly as intended

Commercial solar in Long Beach: demand charges change everything

For many commercial customers, the bill is not just energy (kWh)—it’s also power (kW). Demand charges can dominate. That’s why serious commercial solar strategy often includes batteries: you don’t just want to generate energy—you want to control peak demand.

What batteries do for commercial
  • Shave peak kW demand (reducing demand charges)
  • Limit spikes from HVAC, refrigeration, process loads, EV charging
  • Provide ride-through for sensitive equipment
  • Turn solar into a controllable operating asset
How we approach it
  • Load review (15-minute intervals if available)
  • Peak event identification (what causes spikes)
  • Battery sizing around kW first, then kWh
  • A clear operating plan: what the battery does each day

Permitting in Long Beach

ABC Solar handles plan/permit coordination and inspection scheduling. Long Beach has an online permitting pathway for solar PV, energy storage, and EV charging.

City resources:

Solar PV permits: longbeach.gov … solar-permit
Permits portal: permitslicenses.longbeach.gov

What we check on every Long Beach site visit

Roof type and attachment plan, main service panel capacity, conduit routing, fire access/setbacks, shading, monitoring signal strength, and future loads (EVs, heat pumps, ADUs). If you have a unique roof: Choice of Roof.

Send your electric bill and tell us your goal: TOU savings, backup power, or both. We’ll design the system around how you actually live or operate—not just a generic “panel count.”

Helpful attachments: electric bill(s), photos of your main panel, roof overview, and (if you want storage) your backup priorities.
